Land Rover discovery electric hand brake wont release

There are a few things to note here. Firstly this is rather complex for someone with no mechanical knowledge so there is an alternative.

The Land Rover Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 are known for the common fault of the hand brake also known as the parking brake getting stuck on. This video shows how to manually release it on a Discovery 4. On a Discovery there its very similar however the loop is under the little panel directly behind the parking brake switch.

This set up is very similar on the Range Rover. you can find out how to release it on the Discovery by clicking here.

The parking brake mechanism is an electric motor located above the read diff which operates on a spline that pulls mechanical cables on in the same manner as a conventional handbrake. If the hand brake locks on its because the module has failed an willed to be replaced.

This module comes complete with the motor and the two cables. This means that in some cases it can be easier to get under the vehicle and cut the cable off. They are going into the bin anyway. This will release the cable. Note: you need to be cautious when doing this as the cables can be tight and flick back. Additionally the vehicle can move when the brake is released.

GDl Automotive Serves is proud to inform you that we have a Land Rover trained technician on our team. Prestige Carcare has saved our clients money and time with his knowledge of the Land Rover engines, particularly the known issues with timing chain faults and the twin timing belts on TDV6 engines. With Prestige Carcare experience this repair is now able to be carried out in-house, saving our clients thousands as they don’t have to pay the dealers inflated rates.

Similarly his experience has led to advising some clients to trade-in before large expenses deem them bankrupt and has been able to advise when after market options are available as opposed to inflated OEM parts.
